Westernmost Confederate Graves
According to world renowned archaeologist, Dr. Deni Seymour, Dragoon Springs has many things that makes this location an absolute gem of the Butterfield Overland Mail Trail, which is now part of the designated Butterfield National Historic Trail.
One of these things is the fact that this is the westernmost confederate burial grounds from the Civil War era.
First Battle of Dragoon Springs (May 5, 1862):
- A small Confederate force was ambushed by a large band of Chiricahua Apache warriors led by Cochise and Francisco.
- Out of the four killed, three were Confederate soldiers from Texas, including Sgt. Sam Ford. The other killed was a Mexican stock herder named Ricardo.
- The Apaches reportedly captured 25 horses and 30 mules.
